THE ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH IN SOPRON IS OPEN AGAIN FOR VISITORS

The renovation works of the St. Michael's Church in Sopron, one of the most significant Gothic buildings in Hungary, were completed in the autumn of 2020 and the church has been open again to the public since the summer of this year.

During the renovation of the nearly 800-year-old church, the aim was to restore the condition created during the 19th-century reconstruction.
The roof, exterior facade and plinth, interior wall surfaces and decorations, and the limestone flooring have been renewed.

The most valuable work of art in the church, a gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 15th century, has regained its original form and hues, freeing itself from the transformations of later ages.

After the removal of the old flooring, a part of the old Solnhofen limestone tiles was laid again, while other parts of the church (e.g. the sanctuary) was covered with new 45x45x2 cm Solnhofen limestone tiles with finely honed surface and hand-cut edges. The new tiles were produced in Solnhofen by our German partner, Solnhofen Stone Group.
As a result of the floor restoration, the old patinated Solnhofen tiles and the new floor covering made of the same limestone can be seen next to each other in the renovated church interior.
