THE SANDSTONE COVERING OF THE RENEWED OLD CHRISTIAN MAUSOLEUM IN PÉCS

18-12-2023

The renovation of the Old Christian Mausoleum in Pécs was completed last year.

During the renovation, the IV. century mausoleum showing an early Christian burial chamber (part of the UNESCO World Heritage) was expanded with a new reception building in order to better serve the visitors.

The new reception hall includes the new entrance and the stairs leading to the burial chamber.

The surrounding area of the burial chamber has also been renovated, making the former ruins of the mausoleum more visible and clear for visitors.

The spectacular facade of the new building is made of yellowish-beige Spanish sandstone. The naturalness and color scheme of the 80x40 cm slabs with a cut surface fit well with the remaining walls of the 1600-year-old former chapel, and form a harmonious architectural unit with the modern glass surfaces and interiors of the reception building.

More than 200 transparent acrylglas rods have been placed in the stone facade wich provide natural light to the interior during the day. At night, the light emanating from the building creates a unique atmosphere around the mausoleum.

Similar to the facade cladding, the new 5 cm thick cover plates of the wall running around the former chapel are made of the yellow-beige sandstone, thereby creating a unified architectural environment.

The old paving around the mausoleum has also been renewed, the new stone paving is made of 6 cm thick 33x33 cm reddish granite tiles, which can also be found in the nearby Dóm Square.
