THE MONASTERY OF THE CAMALDOLESE HERMITS OF MAJK HAS BEEN RENOVATED

14-04-2022

From March 2022, the entire building complex of the Camaldulian hermitage of Majk is again open for visitors. The one of the most unique monasteries in Europe surrounded with forest and a beautiful lake was built in 1733 and has been preserved in its original form.

In the first phase of the renovation of the monastery, the castle-like central building (Foresteria) was completed between 2012 and 2015. The so-called clausura with the 17 individual walled hermit houses (cell-houses), the remaining tower of the former church and the associated gardens was renewed in the second phase in 2020-2022.

Some of the renovated cell-houses have been decorated according to contemporary hermitages, while others serve as an exhibition space. Cell-houses not used for museum purposes will later function as accommodation for visitors.

During the renovation project, the floor coverings of the Baroque historic building complex have also been renewed. In the first phase, the finely decorated common dining room (refectory) and the corridors of the main building were completed with Solnhofen limestone similarly to the original architectural concept. In the second phase, new Solnhofen limestone floor tiles were laid in the small chapels of the cell-houses and on the ground floor of the church tower.

The monastery, which is a curiosity from an architectural and cultural history point of view, has been supplemented with a new visitor center, a museum shop and a playground, offering an attractive destination for lonely, peace-seeking visitors as well as for families.
