STONE OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER 2023: RUSCHITA MARBLE

Ruschita is the most famous marble deposit in Romania, put into operation by the end of the 19th century. The quarries are located between 600 and 850 m altutude in southern Poiana Rusca Mointains (South-West Romania), operating in a perimeter of 43 hectares.

The Ruschita marble is a metamorphic stone with high crystallinity and medium size of crystals (until 0.2-0.5 mm).

Ruschita presents a variety of colours: yellowish, orange, light pink and pink mostly with greyish veins and compact texture. The most typical outlook of the Ruschita marble coverings is the pink backround colour with irregural grey veins.

Historically Ruschita marble was very popular in the area of Austria-Hungary at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as the region of the quarry was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the year of 1920. Many new public and private buildings in the rapidly growing and developing cities like Budapest and Vienna had fascinating Ruschita marble wall-, floor and stair coverings in the decorative lobbies and staircases. Some of these original marble decorations are still visible in these city centers.

Over the last 20-30 years, Ruschita marble has been successfully used in many projects around the world, in this way Ruschita marble has gained prestige and recognition in famous projects, like luxury hotels and apartments.
