STONE OF THE MONTH - MARCH 2018: SOLNHOFEN LIMESTONE

30-03-2018

Solnhofen limestone has been known for centuries as a perfect stone covering in Central Europe and also in Hungary, where it is often called as Kelheimer stone. It has already been mined and used in the city of Solnhofen and its surroundings 2000 years ago by Romans.

Due to its environmentally friendly mining, Solnhofen stone has an excellent eco-balance: it is still mined by hand today and the whole production process requires very low energy consumption compared to other building materials or natural stones.

It's a timelessly beautiful material that fits well with every style, even today's architectural trends. The quarry rough surface of the Solnhofen stone is absolutly unique, providing extremly different application possibilities. The honed surface, what has been often used in the Hungarian historical monuments (churches, castles, museums), gives elegance to the high-quality interiors of old and new buildings as well.

Since it is a natural stone, it varies in color and structure. Iron-manganese precipitations create unique patterns of stone, the so-called dendrites. In the quarry, the plates are minded as  polygonal plates. These are processed in the factory to a variety of formats with a thickness of 10-30 mm.

Solnhofen natural stone is completely free of radiation and does not require any chemical treatment. This is the hardest, most durable and dense limestone in the world. Thanks to its characteristics it became a well-know material in the 18-19. century as litographic stone.
