STONE OF THE MONTH - JANUARY 2022: POHORSKI TONALITE

Igneous rock originates from the region of Pohorje mountain, North-East Slovenia. It is generally known as Pohorje tonalite or Pohorje granite, but in terms of petrographic it is a granadiorite with high containt of plagioclase (feldspar).

It’s special appearance is mainly determined by the white veins, which make it unique. The width of the small to medium grained veins are various, occasionally reaches 10-15 cm.

Its high compressive and bending strength, strong frost and abreasion resistance make Pohorski tonalite perfectly suitable for outdoor coverings typically for paving with sandblasted surface or in form of split cubes. With polished surface it can be an interesting solution for creating spectacular wall-, floor-, and stair coverings in the interior design, using the sharp visual contrast of the white veins and the dark grey background.

The Pohorje tonalite as outdoor paving stone has become a part of the identity of Slovenian towns. It is a very popular and frequently used paving stone in Slovenia, tipically for building squares, streets, pedestrian zones in historical city centers, but it has inspired numerous architects and sculptors as well, so becoming a part of the Slovenian cultural heritage.
