STONE OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2018: ANRÖCHTE LIMESTONE

15-12-2018

Anröchte, located in North-west Germany, was already famous for quarrying in the Middle Ages. The green-blue-grey Anröchte limestone is approx. 120 million years old. Its material contains approx. 30% quartz, in addition to the 2/3 proportion of carbonates. Its characteristic greenish tones are due to glauconite content. The limestone was formed during the deposition of shallow sea sediments and it is characterized by fossils (snails, shells, plant residues, etc.), thus giving a unique appearance to the Anröchte limestone. The stone is mined in two different layers, the lower layer has a greenish shade while the top layer is greyish-blue and more homogeneous.

With its restrained, yet unique character and with its spectacular fossils, this stone type offers a truly unique effect, harmonizing well with various architectural styles. Thanks to its timeless appearance, it is suitable both for using in modern or classic built environments.
