SPANISH SANDSTONE AND SOLNHOFEN LIMESTONE IN THE NEW BUILDING OF KALOCSA MUSEUM

On March 15, the new building of the ASTRICIUM Archbishop's Museum was opened in Kalocsa. From an architectural point of view, the task was to design a new, modern, yet well-matched building next to the existing building of the museum.

During the construction leaded by chief architect Márta Vörös, the facade of the new building were made of Crema Vateada spanish sandstone. The sandstone from Burgos, Spain, gives a unique character to the building: the yellow-beige-reddish shades do not hurt and fit to the yellow color of the adjacent building, but the pattern of the stone and the alternation of shades still give a unique look.

The interior spaces and stairs of the building were covered with slightly honed limestone tiles from Solnhofen, Germany. This limestone is known as Kelheim stone (based on the name of the former Danube loading port in Bavaria) for more than 200 years in Hungary. In the building of the Archbishop’s Palace the original Solnhofen floor covering is still in use, while the fully renewed Kalocsa Cathedral has now a new flooring with 50x50 cm slightly honed Solnhofen limestone tiles.
