NEW HOTEL BUILDING WITH JURA FACADE ON SZERVITA SQUARE IN BUDAPEST

19-04-2021

The Emerald Residence hotel and apartment house, located on Szervita Square in Budapest, has been completed. The building used to serve as the home of the Downtown Telephone Exchange Center (built 1973-1976), on the grounds of the former Servite monastery that once belonged to the neighbouring St. Anne’s Church. The new hotel building has been created with a partial retention of the structure of the former telephone exchange center and a complete transformation of the exterior and interior appearance.

The site that housed the building almost encircles the adjoining St. Anne’s Church on three sides, creating a serious dilemma for the architects: how to create a modern building which forms an architectural unit with the 300-year-old St. Anne’s Church. The former building of the telephone exchange center had a modern glass-metal facade solution of its time ('70s) and was built tightly on the neighboring church.

The designers of the recently completed new building solved the existing problem by using a natural stone facade with clean lines and simple geometric shapes. By opening the passage between the two buildings towards Servita Square, the masses of the church and the hotel were also more clearly separated.

The facade cladding consists of 3 and 4 cm thick Jura limestone elements with sandblasted and striated surface. The material of the cladding comes from the limestone quarries around Solnhofen/Eichstätt, Germany.

The beige-yellow limestone harmonizes well with the church’s light plastered facade and blends modestly into the eclectic look of Szervita Square, while giving the new high-prestige hotel an elegant look.

The inner passage between the building and the church will be open for pedestrian traffic as well. Walking through the narrow passage one can really feel the robust nature of the building, but the former dark passage has also become much friendlier and brighter thanks to the beige shade of the Jura limestone cladding.

A part of the facade elements was produced at the plant of our German partner, Solnhofen Stone Group Gmbh.
