CARRARA - THE CAPITAL OF THE MARBLE

Marble has been one of the most noble, most elegant and most fashionable architectural and sculptural stone material for thousands of years. Within this, the Carrara marble has an outstanding role in the cultural history.
The entire Massa-Carrara region, and especially Carrara, is about the world-famous treasure of the white quarries of the area. Not only the historical buildings of the city, the Romanesque and Gothic facades of churches and palaces, the statues and decorations, but also the benches in the parks, and even the streets, squares and pavements are made of the world-famous marble.
There are about 600 quarries above the town between the marvelous mountain peaks, about half of which are currently being used. They produce more marble than any other field in the word. Heavy trucks transport the giant blocks to the marble manufacturing companies, that are located around the city and the harbor of Carrara. From this place continues the well-known material its journey to the whole world.
