ANRCÖHTE LIMESTONE AND JURA LIMESTONE COVERINGS IN THE RENOVATED MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN BUDAPEST

26-11-2018

Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts reopened its doors after a three-year renovation work in October 2018. During the renovation new exhibiation halls have been created, some of old exhibition halls have been renewed, after 70 years the restored Roman Hall can be visited again in its original splendor and a new museum bistro welcomes the visitors.

On the ground floor spectacular new natural stone coverings have been installed in the new exhibition halls. The gateways between the halls are decorated by special green-grey Anröchte limestone block doorframes designed by architect István Mányi. Approx. 120 tons of block were selected for the project in the quarry at Anröchte, Germany. The 12 cm thick panels sometimes exceed the height of 3 meters, crating a really impressive effect. The restrained, yet unique character of Anröchte limestone is well suited to the new clean style of the museum's renewed spaces.

The new cloakroom and the new museum café&bistro have been also created on the ground level. In these spaces, the wall coverings and the block door frames were formed from jura-gelb limestone. The warmer colors of the elegant yellow-beige covering determines the atmosphere of these rooms. The classic colours of honed jura-gelb limestone harmonizes well with the modern furnishings, creating a unique interior design. As a part of the renovation, two new stairs leading from the ground floor to the exhibition halls of Antiquity have also been constructed using jura-gelb limestone. The installed volume of the jura limestone blocks, extracted near Solnhofen, Germany, is over 40 tonnes.

You can find pictures of the new stone coverings in the gallery below.
